Calm down ..

January 23rd and it's 85 degrees in the shade. At least it was, on Miami Beach, back in 1997. This shot came to light as I delved into more of my Kodachrome slides, with the aim of adding a travel photography title to my collection of photography books.

As I write, Storm Jocelyn is hurtling its way towards the UK, mere minutes (it would appear) since the country was battered by Storm Isha, the tenth named storm this season. It seems to me the UK is actually living under one constant storm, so might it just be simpler to name the calm periods in between instead? You know, the quieter moments between all the wind and rain? Calm Albert, anybody? Calm Betty, Calm Charles, Calm Dave? Just a thought. Back to my Kodachrome ..

It's all about the weather ..

I'm halfway through designing an album from a Wedding in June, smiling ruefully as I remember the problems I had with the brilliant sunshine of a warm summer's day. As I write this, I reckon it's not stopped raining for a good twelve hours now..

Thing is, I've got a PR shoot booked in for this morning that has to take place outside - well, it involves a race-horse, for one thing - and I'm just wondering if we'll ever get a break in the weather to get the shots. Rather annoyingly the job's already been postponed twice, missing out on all that late summer sunshine we've had in recent days!..

The right camera, the correct lens? For sure they're important when it comes to getting the job done, but some days .. well, some days it's just all about the weather ..

Stop Press: 2.30 pm .. Rain stopped, job went ahead! Hurrah! Can't show you the shots yet but here's a bit of background .. a large bag of carrots was involved!!..

Whether the weather ..

Do not ever - ever - let me blog about the British weather again! On Saturday - as you'll have read - it seemed as if all hell was about to break loose over the gorgeous plains of Cheshire, with tornado warnings and torrential rain promised as the day progressed. I was gritting my teeth and packing towels and a waterproof jacket as I set off for Saturday's Wedding.  What happened? It was the hottest, sunniest Wedding I've shot for bloomin' ages! Having said that, I'm not complaining, although shiny Wedding guests and dazzling sunshine did throw me the odd challenge or two on the day. It was great to be back at Willington Hall, too. Have a look at Emma and Dan's page here...

I was thinking, though. Surely it can't be a coincidence that - on a weekend when the Met Office got things so spectacularly wrong - they also lost the contract to supply weather forecasts to the BBC. Of course it can, but go with it, folks! I just think they're spelling it wrong. It should be called the whether!...

The devil's in the detail...

I do like to get to a Wedding nice and early! That way I get to spend time soaking up the detail of a venue before all the 'madness' kicks off. Saturday's Wedding was especially good for that, because it was at a venue that was new to me - Eleven Didsbury Park. It was full of little nooks and crannies, and a lovely lemony cake, all crying out to be photographed. The shots build up to make a lovely memory of the couple's Wedding Day, so it's important they're topical to that day. That barometer? - set fair to 'Very Dry' - that shows for sure that I shot it on Saturday, in that brief window of decent weather that we had (You can click on the photo to see it in more detail!) Now though, as the rain hammers against my windows again, it's just teasing me! I think I'll have the shot enlarged and put into a frame for my hall! It's a little devil of a detail!...
