65, eh? ..

Bloody hell, I've reached the grand old age of 65. Happy Birthday to me! Until recently*, hitting that milestone used to mean retirement after 50 years of hard graft and probably death within a fortnight! Sixty-five meant you were an old-aged pensioner, put out into the long grass to concentrate on your hobbies and contemplate the approaching end. It meant an awkward little soirée with your work-mates and a speech from the boss, two cans of Watney's, a gold clock and a bouquet for the missus. Until I was eighteen I worked at the Gardner Diesel factory in Eccles, where there were retirement parties like those in the offices and on the shop floor on a regular basis. I used them to 'practice' press photography, honing my skills until the day I could quit my shitty job and start working full-time on a newspaper. Here are pictures from two such events, the lucky new pensioners gripping hands with their gaffers and staring their demise in the face. How I feel for the chap that received an electric razor ..

*If I were still working, I would now face another two years at the coal-face before my time was 'up'. The retirement age was raised to 67, which makes me feel all the better (smug alert) for retiring a full ten years early. Anyone for frisbee?

The Menace!

Dad's birthday, and today he'd have been .. well, it doesn't matter does it, seeing as he didn't make it past 75. Here he is, smartly togged up as always ("You never know who's looking at you, Martin"), though you've got to love a guy that would wear a suit and tie and still have a Dennis the Menace badge on his lapel!

Love you, Dad ..

Happy Birthday, Dad ..

I always used to think I looked like my Mum, but putting these two shots together has made me realise I might have been wrong. Here's my Dad - aged about 45 - and a shot of me - er, just a likkle bit older - that was taken yesterday for a National Library Day event here in France. I've turned into my Dad. Good grief ..

I was looking for a shot of good ol' Joe as it's his birthday today, and I wanted to mark the moment. Happy Birthday Dad .. you'd have been 85 today, you old fart!

(Ps: I'm the one on the right!)

Happy Birthday to me ..

It's my birthday! No work will be done today! Rather, we're off to the beach and, although it won't quite be 'Surfin' USA', we're aiming to have a damned fine time amongst the dunes at Formby!..

Catch you on the morrow ..

Write on time ..

Yesterday I was talking about the years flying by, and it occurred to me later that I'd just booked tickets to see The Tubes .. on their fortieth anniversary tour! Yes, those funky San Francisco rockers are still going strong after all these years, and I can't wait to see them again next month..

Anyway, this shot popped up whilst I was editing a Wedding yesterday. One of 'my brides' being fashionably late for her Wedding in May. Seven minutes is fine. The record so far this year is forty-five minutes late, caused by a broken-down VW camper that was meant to take the poor bride to the chapel! My, how she laughed .. later!

It would have been my Dad's 82nd birthday today. Now there's a time I'd like to get back ..

Two today! ..

Two today! Culcheth Photo Studio has been open for two years exactly!..

Well, what can I say? The honest answer is .. I'm amazed I'm still here! I'll hold my hands up and say it hasn't been quite as busy as I'd have liked, and I've been on the verge of closing down quite a few times. However, it's lovely to have 'a place of my own' and I intend to keep it on as long as is economically viable. I thought two pictures of other 'struggling' brothers - taken on my travels - would be appropriate images for today! Here's to the next two years...

Happy birthday to me ..

Many happy returns, Martin! Why, thank you, dear reader for yes, it is my birthday and as soon as I've written this blog I shall be 'downing tools' for the day and getting down to some funky celebrating! (One of the luxuries - it has to be said - of being self-employed!) I've already had two lovely presents this morning. Firstly, I was rather pleased to spot one of my photographs in a Facebook posting - a PR company I occasionally work for has written a piece about 'the value of good PR photography' - and included the picture I've marked with the arrow. And, in an email I picked up earlier, a family who came in to the studio recently for some portraits emailed to say they were "delighted they now have some really nice photographs of a moment in time"! God, there's nothing like a bit of lovely feedback to boost the tender artistic ego!

So, as the owner of StudioFiveFour turns FiveFour I'll say 'Have a nice day' and catch you - hangover-free, I hope - tomorrow...

Having your cake ..

I couldn't find a single shot with a cake in it when I wanted to illustrate my 'cake-smash' blog yesterday but now, like buses, two have come along at once! On the left, the late great Hungarian photographer André Kertesz, celebrating his 90th birthday in Bradford, and on the right my sister Patricia, notching up what looks like her 12th or 13th birthday in sunny old Eccles! My 54th birthday is on the horizon and I'm wondering - running Studio54 as I do - if I should do something special to mark the coincidence of numbers. I just hope I get a cake .. and that I get to eat it .. but I certainly won't be putting the requisite number of candles on it!

Party, party ..

It's my lovely girlfriend's birthday today, and I need no more excuse than that to chuck an appropriate archive shot on the blog! Jeez, it's a long time since I've been to a party like that one, and thank God I don't have to go to another one ever again! Funny, isn't it? We all go on about ageing but, quite frankly, I wouldn't want to be that young again. I know everybody says it but I feel 'our generation' hit it just right with the best music, lifestyles and technological advances all within our 'four score' .. although, I admit, the jumpers needed working on!
Anyway, put that down .. that's my beer!...
